Wisconsin - America's Heartland – was settled in a swooping wave of pioneers in the nineteenth century. Rolling, wooded hills, affordable farmland and homesteads waiting to be staked out attracted America’s Eastern-born Yankees as well as immigrants from Germany, Norway, Poland, and other European countries. Wisconsin was the American Dream of self-sufficiency, home security and instant settlements inhabited by like-minded neighbors.  Nine historical sites are kept vibrantly alive by The Wisconsin Historical Society, from the First Capitol (1836, Belmont, Wisc.) to Circus World Museum.

Wisconsin's northern boundaries are Lake Superior and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (the Menominee River is a natural boundary); on the east there is Lake Michigan; Illinois is the southern border; and Iowa and Minnesota are to the west (the Mississippi River is much of that boundary).

40% of Wisconsin's land area is forested. The pulp, paper, and paper-products industrial complex in Green Bay and Appleton is one of the largest in the nation.  Sand and gravel, stone, and lime are other valuable mineral resources.  Zinc and lead are mined in the Driftless Area in the southwest.

Wisconsin boasts one of the nation's largest dairy herds and leads the nation in the production of cheese. ( It is the second largest milk producer.) The state's second most valuable farm commodities are corn and soybeans with hay, oats, potatoes, alfalfa, and a great variety of fruits and vegetables not far behind. Food processing and the manufacture of machinery (centered in Milwaukee, Madison, and Racine),  vehicles and transportation equipment, metal products, medical instruments and equipment, farm implements, and lumber comprise most of the industry.

One of the state's larger employers, however is the Winnebago tribegambling casinos throughout the state are operated by several Native American groups and contribute greatly to the burgeoning tourism industry.

The guidebook, "Sacred Sites of Wisconsin",  profiles more than 400 sites in Wisconsin that are noted places of worship and pilgrimage.

Of course, Wisconsin, the Cheese State,  doesn't just have Tourism - Wisconsin has Agricultural Tourism!   Do not miss the Nanchas Elk Ranch, a working Elk Ranch with tours and gift shop, in Wisconsin Dells. "Walleye on the Wolf", shows Walleye fishing from the heart of Wolf River Country in Wisconsin.  Wisconsin is noted for muskie, pike, trout, bass, catfish, bluegill, and others.  The National Fresh Water Fishing Hall Of Fame is in Hayward Wisconsin.  Its main building is designed to resemble a leaping fish (muskellunge). Lepidopterists are in Wisconsin Heaven with over 70 butterfly species as well as over 30 skipper species calling Wisconsin home.

Wisconsin is for families.  An abundance of Museums with interactive displays for children, amusement parks and waterparks co-exist with quality golf courses and skim facilities.  For a fun and rewarding hobby for the whole family, where else but in Wisconsin, could you see so much Garden Railroading?  Everything from sitting on a garden seat watching your train make the grade over by the bird feeder to riding through the garden at Circus World.

The deepest spring-fed lake in Wisconsin, Green Lake, is the source and inspiration of Green Lake County. Home of rolling hills, deep natural woods, and tranquil, sparkling streams and lakes, Green Lake County is centrally located in Wisconsin and boasts many attractions: Berlin, the fur and leather capitol of the world; Markesan, once the 3rd richest community in the United States, now rich in Victorian homes noted for architecture and history; Ripon, the birthplace of the Republican Party; and there is Princeton, home of the largest outdoor flea-market in the state of Wisconsin.

Sauk County, Wisconsin, offers Wisconsin Dells, Baraboo, Devil's Lake, Circus World, Mid-Continent Railway Museum, ICF.

Wisconsin Dells  is noted for horseback riding, nature trails, fishing and boating not far from their waterparks and amusement parks.  This 18 square miles of  spectacular caverns, hauntingly beautiful passageways and towering, 100' cliffs was formed 500 million years ago, during the Cambrian period.  Located in South Central Wisconsin about 115 miles west of Milwaukee and about 50 miles north of Madison, Wisconsin Dells holds history as lightly as is possible for an area that has evidence of it all the way back to pre-Cambrian times.

The International Crane Foundation, the world’s leading center for the study and preservation of cranes; Robot World, an interactive, robot-guided tour; Trappers Turn, a championship golf course designed by Andy North and Roger Packard, are all located in Wisconsin Dells as well as Riverview Park (featuring the Hurricane) & Waterworld (offering guests a dark tunnel scream-thrill ride or a black opaque bobsled-like experience).

An international attraction is the Circus World Museum, at the site of the Ringling Bros. Circus winter quarters in Baraboo, Wisconsin.Madison, Wisconsin was named the #6 Best City for Families (Child magazine, March 2001) and One of the nation's Best Small Cities for Families (Family Fun magazine, September 2000), but these are only a few of the awards won by this this premier United States city..

The beautiful Olbrich Botanical Gardens on the Lake Monona shores has become an international attraction, with concerts and other offerings delighting more than 250,00 people yearly.  Nature Net is the link to the Madison area's outdoor environmental education sites. Each site provides special nature programming for children, school teachers and the general public.

Madison
is the Capitol of Wisconsin and is located in Dane County, Wisconsin. Its attractions range from vineyards and antique shows to cave mounds and natural springs.  Most noted for its natural beauty, Madison is built on an isthmus between lakes Monona and Mendota. Five area lakes and over 200 parks provide  year-round outdoor activities including hiking, biking,
cross-country skiing, swimming, sailing and snow sailing, fishing and ice fishing.

Milwaukee River - Downtown Milwaukee - Visit our Milwaukee PhotosAlmost all of Wisconsin's major industries are to be found within metropolitan Milwaukee, from their traditional brewing and meatpacking to the manufacture of heavy machinery and diesel and gasoline engines.

But this does not mean that Milwaukee is all work and no play!!  Milwaukee Naturally  - the wild side, investigates nature in the Milwaukee area.   Milwaukee Public Museum  houses three floors of exhibit space. Some featured exhibits include dinosaurs, the streets of old Millwaukee, North American Indians, European Village and their vaunted Butterfly Garden among many more. Other must-sees are the Golda Meir Library, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee , the Wisconsin Marine Historical Society (conserves the Great Lakes Marine Collection: 85,000 Great Lakes vessel archival documents and artifacts).  Historic Milwaukee, Inc.  provides walking tours throughout Milwaukee's neighborhoods, as well educational programs and presentations to promote historical and architectural awareness of the city.

Milwaukee Architecture  rates a special mention and for sheer fun with a long tradition, do not miss the Milwaukee Curling Club.

A land of mystery and abundant water, Northern Wisconsin's history extends further into the past, of course.  Do not miss Madeline Island Historical Museum, featuring prehistoric Ojibwe relics as well as later (1659) trade goods, missionaries' effects and tools of the lumbering and maritime industries. (The Chequamegon Bay region was the center of the early fur trade.)  Called 'America's Greatest Trail', the Ice Age Trail awaits hikers, campers, swimmers, fishers and budding paleontologists alike.  Parts  of Wisconsin were covered by six major lobes during the late Wisconsin Glaciation so the trail winds through most of the counties in the state, Including Marquette, the boyhood home of John Muir.  It is significant that Wisconsin has many paranormal websites.  The rough isolation of Wisconsin's North Woods region is cut by part of the Gogebic range, from which much iron ore was extracted before 1965.  Iron mining has since stopped altogether. Important copper deposits were discovered in the north in the 1970s.Wisconsin has numerous ports on the Great Lakes capable of accommodating oceangoing vessels. The superb harbor at Superior (shared with Duluth, Minn.) has sizable shipyards and coal and ore docks that are among the nation's largest.

Bayfield County is composed of quaint and scenic, tiny to midsize towns nestled in the national forest or situated on the shores of Lake Superior. Beautiful scenery, family ties and the standard of living have created a stable population.  Major Events include American Birkebeiner Ski Marathon, Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival and the Firehouse 50 Race.

Ashland and Bayfield Counties are stunningly beautiful. Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands, and the Chequamegon National Foresthave brought the tourism industry to the  communities of Ashland, Iron River, Bayfield, Odanah, Cable, Grand View, Port Wing, Drummond, Oulu, Herbster, Barnes, Cornucopia, Clam Lake, Red Cliff, Sanborn, Marengo, LaPointe, Mellen, Washburn, Glidden and Butternut
