Wisconsin - America's Heartland – was settled in a swooping wave of pioneers in the nineteenth century. Rolling, wooded hills, affordable farmland and homesteads
waiting to be staked out attracted America’s Eastern-born Yankees as well as immigrants from Germany, Norway, Poland, and other European countries. Wisconsin was the American Dream of self-sufficiency, home security and instant
settlements inhabited by like-minded neighbors. Nine historical sites are kept vibrantly alive by
The Wisconsin Historical Society,
from
the First Capitol (1836, Belmont,
Wisc.) to Circus World
Museum.
Wisconsin's northern boundaries are Lake Superior and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (the Menominee River is a natural boundary); on the east there is Lake Michigan; Illinois is the southern border;
and Iowa and Minnesota are to the west (the Mississippi River is much of that boundary).
40% of Wisconsin's land area is forested. The pulp, paper, and paper-products industrial complex in Green Bay and Appleton is one of the largest in the nation. Sand and gravel, stone, and lime are other valuable
mineral resources. Zinc and lead are mined in the Driftless Area
in the southwest.
Wisconsin boasts one of the nation's largest dairy herds and leads the nation in the production of cheese. ( It is the second largest milk producer.) The state's
second most valuable farm commodities are corn and soybeans with hay, oats, potatoes, alfalfa, and a great variety of fruits and vegetables not far behind. Food processing and the manufacture of machinery (centered in Milwaukee, Madison,
and Racine), vehicles and transportation equipment, metal products, medical instruments and equipment, farm implements, and lumber comprise most of the industry.
One of the state's larger employers, however is the Winnebago tribe. gambling casinos throughout the state
are operated by several Native American groups and contribute greatly to the burgeoning tourism industry.
The guidebook, "Sacred Sites of Wisconsin", profiles more than 400 sites in Wisconsin that are noted
places of worship and pilgrimage.
Of course, Wisconsin, the Cheese State, doesn't just have Tourism - Wisconsin has

The National Fresh Water Fishing Hall Of Fame is in Hayward Wisconsin. Its main building is designed to resemble a leaping fish (muskellunge).
Lepidopterists are in Wisconsin Heaven with over 70 butterfly species as well as
over 30 skipper species calling Wisconsin home.

family, where else but in Wisconsin, could you see so much
Garden Railroading? Everything from

Victorian homes noted for architecture and history; Ripon, the birthplace of the Republican Party; and there is
Princeton,

Trappers Turn,
